HOW TO THAW A FROZEN TURKEY
(AKA: Preventing Thanksgiving Panic Mode)
Refrigerator Method
Slow, safe, and responsible — unlike your ex.
Plan: 1 day per 4–5 lbs
| Turkey Size | Thawing Time |
|---|---|
| 4–12 lbs | 1–3 days |
| 12–16 lbs | 3–4 days |
| 16–20 lbs | 4–5 days |
| 20–24 lbs | 5–6 days |
Instructions:
✔ Leave it in the wrapper (we don’t judge)
✔ Park it in a tray so raw turkey juice doesn’t stage a rebellion
✔ Keep fridge at 40°F or below
✔ Once thawed, it can chill (literally) 2 more days
Cold Water Thaw (For Procrastinators)
Plan: 30 minutes per pound
| Turkey Size | Time Needed |
|---|---|
| 8–12 lbs | 4–6 hours |
| 12–16 lbs | 6–8 hours |
| 16–20 lbs | 8–10 hours |
| 20–24 lbs | 10–12 hours |
Instructions:
✔ Keep wrapped
✔ Submerge in COLD water (not wishful-thinking warm)
✔ Change water every 30 minutes
✔ Cook immediately after thawing
(Do NOT shove it back in the fridge like leftovers.)
Microwave Method
For: Absolute chaos only.
Follow your microwave manual.
Then: Cook immediately
(because bacteria also loves Thanksgiving).
NOT APPROVED METHODS:
X Leaving it on the kitchen counter
X Running hot water over it
X Putting it in the garage “because it’s basically a fridge”
X Leaving it in the car (yes… people do that)
When It’s Finally Done:
Internal temp: 165°F
(Use a thermometer — do not rely on vibes.)
We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and you're not spinning too many plates!!
